Once a year in April, a week is dedicated to the national movement of raising awareness around infertility in the United States. Infertility is actually quite common. In fact, 13% of couples in the United States have trouble conceiving. Additionally, infertility can affect both women and men equally. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one-third of infertility is related to women’s health issues, another third to men’s health issues, and the other third due to a mix of women’s and men’s health issues.
National Infertility Awareness Week® is intended to raise the voices of those experiencing infertility while also advocating for greater support around those struggling to build a family.
The History of National Infertility Awareness Week®
National Infertility Awareness Week was founded in 1989 by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. National Infertility Awareness Week is the largest awareness campaign focused on the subject of infertility. Every year a theme is defined to bring awareness to the different ways people struggle with infertility.
This year, National Infertility Awareness Week® will be observed April 21 – 27. The week will be dedicated to discourses around the lack of access to infertility options and emotional support. In particular, it will look at the issues of infertility options for those without access to insurance coverage, or without the financial support to afford infertility treatment or alternatives to conceiving like adoption.
How Can You Help Raise Awareness?
Be a part of the solution and help raise awareness for those struggling with infertility. Here are several actions you can take during National Infertility Awareness Week.
Use Social Media to Raise Awareness
Using social media is a great way to spread the word quickly and, in this case, is a great way to help make the subject of infertility a trending topic online. This year, National Infertility Awareness Week® is encouraging the use of #InfertilityUncovered across social media platforms.
Here’s how to get involved:
- Share your own infertility struggles and tag @resolveorg
- Share official National Infertility Awareness Week® images
- Share infertility facts
- Start a Facebook® fundraiser
- Find RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association on social media
Share Your Story
One way to make a powerful impact during National Infertility Awareness Week is by sharing your own story of infertility. Whether you share your story through a social media post, a YouTube® video, or through conversation with someone going through similar struggles, talking about infertility is raising awareness. Share your story or read other stories of encouragement.
