One plus one equals three? Just like the traditional math equation, conception can mean radical changes to your life.
A successful conception relies on many different factors within both your and your partner’s bodies. Planning ahead will let you and your partner establish behaviors and routines that will carry you forward into pregnancy. Here are some things to keep in mind as you get ready to introduce number three.

Although the amount of smoking is related to the overall effect on fertility, as few as five cigarettes per day are associated with a decreased fertility rate.
2. Give up drinking: Alcohol has been shown to reduce the amount of testosterone levels which can lead to a loss of libido.
The quality and movement of sperm can, also, be negatively affected by a liver unable to properly metabolize vitamin A, a necessary part of developing healthy sperm.
If decreased libido and underdeveloped sperm aren’t enough of a reason to quit, alcohol is toxic to the testes, where sperm is created and stored. Consumption can affect the sperm’s development or ability to reach the egg.
3. Eat well: A zinc deficiency can be directly related to a low sperm count. Eating wholegrain cereals, eggs and seafood is a great way to pick up an extra dose of this essential mineral.
Another element, which has been found to aid fertility, is Selenium. Selenium is found in Brazil nuts, mushrooms and seafood.
Eating well not only ensures that your own body is working at peak levels, but will also bring solidarity between your partner and yourself as she prepares herself to conceive.
1. Give up smoking: During pregnancy, smoking increases the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth and low birth weight. After pregnancy, smoking dramatically increases the chance of respiratory illness in the child.
2. Give up drinking: While the effects of alcohol on a developing fetus are well documented, what many don’t know is that consuming alcohol also has an adverse effect on fertility.
Alcohol affects estrogen and other reproductive hormones in the body. This can mean longer monthly cycles and can increase the frequency of anovulatory cycles – cycles in which the ovary does not release an egg.
A study by the British Medical Journal revealed that women who drank more than 10 alcoholic beverages per week saw impaired fertility.
Even those who drank five or fewer had a harder time conceiving than women who consumed no alcohol while trying to conceive.
3. Take a folic acid supplement:
Beginning to take a supplement before conception is recommended, as NTDs occur early in pregnancy. 400mcg/day is the recommended dose.
Folic acid can also be found in dark green vegetables, whole wheat breads and breakfast cereals.
Have sex: While, perhaps, the most obvious element of a successful conception, regular sex is the best way to increase your chance of getting pregnant. Calculating your most fertile time and making love every day around that time will provide the best chance for pregnancy.
Women mostly ovulate once during each cycle. The primary time for conception is 14 days before the next menstrual period.
Other methods, like checking your vaginal discharge, will indicate when you are at your most fertile. During peak fertility, the discharge will have a stretchy consistency. All women are different and you will get to know what looks and feels normal to you.
