What are Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow on the uterus. During their childbearing years, 1 in 5 women will develop harmless fibroids. You should learn all your options. Symptoms
Most women have small fibroids and do not experience symptoms.
In some cases, the uterine fibroid will cause these symptoms:
- Spotting (bleeding inbetween periods)
- Menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding)
- Urinating more often than usual
- Pelvic cramps
- Painful intercourse
- Menstrual periods that last longer than normally experienced
Causes
The cause of uterine fibroids is unclear, but have been linked to the hormone estrogen (female hormone).
The different types of fibroids depend on the location where they form:
- Myometrial (in the wall of the uterus)
- Submucosal (under the surface of uterus)
- Subserosal (under covering of uterus)
- Pedunculated (outside the cavity of the uterus)
Treatment
Usually fibroids do not require treatment as they will eventually shrink. Treatment options depend on severity and size.
Non-Surgical options include:
- Oral contraceptives
- IUDs (Intrauterine devices)
- Iron supplements
- NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
- Short-Term hormonal therapy injections
Surgical options include:
- Hysteroscopic resection
- Myomectomy
- Uterine artery embolization
- Hysterectomy
