Thyroid Dysfunction: The Basics

Chances are, you know what the thyroid is. You might even know a little bit about what it does. But you likely have no idea how much of an impact thyroid dysfunction can have on your health. Since it's Thyroid Awareness Month, we thought it might be a good time to share some information to increase your knowledge of thyroid dysfunction.

First of all, let's define thyroid dysfunction. We go into more detail in an earlier blog post, but the short version is your thyroid regulates your body's metabolism and plays a significant role in your endocrine system – the system that encompasses all the glands in your body that make hormones. Sometimes, the thyroid will produce too few or too many hormones, which can lead to thyroid dysfunction or disease. In women, thyroid dysfunction can cause problems with their periods, problems getting pregnant, and issues during pregnancy. One in eight women will develop thyroid problems during her lifetime.

The bottom line is thyroid dysfunction can be a big deal and lead to various health challenges for women. So, in addition to our blog post, we've compiled some resources that give you an overview of thyroid dysfunction, possible symptoms, and even a deep dive into the interplay of the thyroid with other diseases.
